Frequently Asked Questions

I'd like to buy one of the paintings or digital photos on this site. What is the process?

If you would like to buy a painting on this site, please contact the artist. She will reply with payment and postage details. For further information, see below. Note that a money back guarantee applies to purchases - please see the Buyer Protection page. Further information about the plant depicted accompanies purchased works.

If you would like to buy a paper copy of a digital photo on this site, please contact the artist. As she uses high resolution RAW format to take the images, scaling up is no problem. Prices range from AU$35 to AU$55 (plus post/packing) depending on size up to A4. Sizes larger than A4 are usually available.

I'd like a painting based on an Australian native flower and designed for a particular location in my house, but I don't live near the artist. Is this possible?

Yes, and this is how Lorel would do it. You would tell her what colours or shapes you would like in the pictures, and provide a description of the location in your house, ideally with dimensions and photos (either emailed or posted). She would find a suitable Australian native flower from her ever expanding image file and email pictures for your approval (see below for an example of plants for the colour blue). To help you decide on the number of paintings and their dimensions, she would send you several possible formats, using simulated photos, showing how the paintings might look on your wall. Then if you wished to go ahead with one of her suggestions, she would forward you a formal quote for your approval. The paintings would be based on the chosen flower and made according to the agreed dimensions. Terms are payment of 10% following the approved quote, and the balance prior to shipment. The money back guarantee described in the Buyer Protection page applies.

Lorel suggested Lechenaultia biloba to a client wanting works featuring the colour blue for his living-room. Her photographs of the plant below show the deep blue and sky blue forms. She composed several simulated suggestions and the one in the image shown below right, featuring three works each 26 inches square, was his choice. (Image used with permission.) Images of the completed works are on the Painting Gallery page.

What materials are used in the paintings?

All works are made with professional-grade materials: oil paint on dense-weave cotton canvas stretched on to heavy-duty pine stretcher bars 3cm deep. The canvas is prepared first with rabbit skin glue which makes it taut, then two coats of gesso, providing a white, light-reflecting background for the paint.

What materials are used in the digital photos? How durable are they?

Lorel prints digital images on her Epson Stylus Photo R800 Inkjet Printer, using Epson UltraChrome Hi-Gloss pigment inks on your choice of Epson Archival Matte Paper or Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper. Epson claims that images printed on Premium Glossy Photo Paper and under glass last for 80 years in fluorescent light. They should be kept away from direct sunlight which has a degrading effect on all prints.

Are the works signed by the artist?

All works are signed (paintings are signed on the back of the work) together with the title and year.

Are the works ready to hang? Are they framed?

Each painting is fitted with a hanging wire and can be hung immediately. The works are not framed, although the buyer may choose to frame them. Framing is unnecessary as the canvas is stapled to the back of the stretcher bars leaving the sides of the paintings clean and white.

Digital photos are posted unmounted and unframed.

What are the payment arrangements?

For buyers within Australia, payment is by direct deposit into a bank account. The artist will provide bank details when you contact her, and will post your painting promptly on receipt of payment. She will keep you informed at each stage. Please note that Lorel is not registered to claim the General Services Tax so she bears that cost.

Overseas buyers are asked to pay by PayPal, a secure online payment system that acts as intermediary between buyer and seller. The system protects your credit card details which no-one can access and is simple and easy to use. A buyer doesn't need a PayPal account, and the system works as follows. The artist sends the buyer a PayPal email link. On following the link, the buyer enters their credit card details on the secure PayPal site. PayPal then notifies both buyer and artist that payment has been made, and the artist posts the painting. She will keep you informed at each stage. PayPal details are at PayPal.

Please note that the money back guarantee described in the Buyer Protection page applies.

Can the works be posted safely? Are they insured against loss?

Lorel takes great care to ensure her paintings and digital photos arrive safely and undamaged. The paintings are wrapped in a plastic covering to protect from water damage, then bubble wrap, heavy duty cardboard and wrapping paper. Items are posted with Australia Post and postage insurance ensures full compensation in the case of loss.

What are the postage costs?

When you email Lorel of your interest in a painting or digital photo, she will advise the amount for post, insurance and packaging which is in addition to the listed price for each painting. As a guide, post, insurance and packaging within Australia for one 12x12 inch painting is $20 to Sydney and $25 to Darwin. For two paintings: $24 to Sydney and $28 to Darwin. A digital image package will weigh much less and therefore cost correspondingly less in postage.

For international destinations, Lorel will advise of postage costs. International buyers please note that postage does not cover any customs duties payable in your home country.
